Tone detail

Ink range
How pale text may get in bright areas — keep it readable.

Shape from a color

Leave out the parts of the picture that have one color — e.g. a white background — so the text takes the shape of the subject.

How similar a color must be to count. Raise it for scans or JPEG noise.
mm
Keeps the text this far away from the color.
mm
Small specks of the color don't punch holes into the text.

Reserved box

Keep a rectangle free, e.g. for a title you add later.
